Designing an Original Piece.

Whenever I’m creating an idea out of nowhere—not for a specific client—I usually start by sketching big lines and shapes just to feel out the overall look and vibe. You can tell my first sketches were completely different from what I ended up with.

I usually begin with an airbrush in Procreate, just mapping out loose lines and shapes without worrying about detail. From there, I refine things with a Derwent Pencil Brush. These are more accurate, intentional shapes and lines, paying attention to the overall style I want the piece to have. At first, I leaned toward round, bubbly forms, then shifted to sharper, more jagged, blocky ones. I also played with interior detail lines on the petals before removing them, because I like the idea of keeping smooth tones and shading as the main focal point.

The leaf design went through the same process. I started with blockier shapes but eventually leaned into softer, oval-like ones. I want the leaves to read darker, so they help push the flower—the main subject—forward. On top of that, the bold outlines around the petals will give the flower even more separation and impact.
